There’s no doubt that the stove is among the hardest working appliances in the modern kitchen. This workhorse is at the heart of most meal preparations, whether you’re frying a small breakfast or making a full-course dinner. With all that work, it’s only natural that your stove would be prone to little problems every once in a while. Of course, if you use a top quality stove, you won’t need to worry too much about frequent or costly stove & range repair. But it helps to know what issues your stove is likely to encounter, as well as what you can do to fix them. Here are some of the commonest stove problems our technicians deal with when out in the field.

Surface burner fails to light

This is a common problem with many stoves. Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to fix. If you find that you must keep relighting your stove’s surface burner, then it’s likely that the burner holes are clogged-up. The solution is to clean them up. Wait until the burner is cool before soaking it in hot water to loosen all that built-up gunk. Then use a metal brush to scrub the burner holes. If the surface burner won’t light after cleaning the burner holes, then it’s likely that the igniter is the culprit. Try turning on the pilot light. If nothing happens, make a service call.

Gas range doesn’t work

If your gas range suddenly stops working, it could be that there’s no power to the range. Check to ascertain whether the pilot flames are lit. If the gas range you use requires electrical power to function, check to see whether other electronic components like the igniter and clock are on. If they are not, then you need to take a look at the circuit breaker panel or fuse box.

Oven smokes a lot when broiling food

A smoky stove is one of the most annoying problems you can have, but it’s quite easy to diagnose and fix. The first possibility is that, over time, there has been grease buildup in your oven, and that grease is now burning off and producing the smoke. It could also be that the broiler pan is turned upside down, allowing grease to drip and burn up inside the broiler. A third possibility is that there isn’t enough clearance between the meat and the flames.

Oven temperature is incorrect

Your oven’s thermostat is responsible for controlling the temperature of the oven. If the oven temperature does not seem to be correct, it’s likely that, over time, the thermostat has lost its calibration, in which case you need to readjust it to the desired temperature.  Simply use a small screwdriver that is located on the thermostat valve stem to adjust the temperature. If your oven uses a sensor to control the temperature, you’ll need to replace it in case it’s malfunctioning.

There are, certainly, several other issues that might afflict your stove and range, but these are among the commonest. Whatever the problem is, it’s best to address it right away.
