Oven Repair

If you run a restaurant or are passionate about cooking at home, then you know that you cannot do without a properly functioning oven. Like all other appliances, however, your oven is bound to encounter problems from time to time. The good news is that with proper use and regular maintenance of your oven, you can prevent issues that call for major oven repair. When your oven suddenly stops working properly, it helps to know what might be the reason so you decide how to deal with the issue. In this article, we are going to show you some of the likely reasons your once normal oven is not heating properly.

There’s a defective heating element

When one of the heating elements in your electric oven is not working, then the oven may grow warm, but it will not attain the right temperature for baking or broiling. It’s easy to tell that a heating element is failing. You’ll notice that it doesn’t glow bright red as it ordinarily would have done. The simple solution is to replace the defective heating element. If nothing changes after installing a new heating element, then it’s very likely that you have an electrical issue. Test the wires leading to the heating element hook-up using a voltage meter. The issue may be a loose connection that needs tightening or a bad wire that needs replacing. If you aren’t confident doing these repairs, have a technician help out.

Your oven temperature sensor has failed

Most electrical ovens come with a temperature sensor whose purpose is to constantly monitor the temperature of the oven. If the sensor fails, it might interfere with the normal functioning of the oven and will need to be replaced. Before doing the replacement, however, it’s important to check whether the heating element and the electrical wires of your oven are working well.

The igniter of your gas oven is out

Gas ovens have an igniter located at the back. If your oven isn’t heating, then you need to check whether the igniter may have a problem. Make sure you’ve shut off the gas first and pulled the oven away from the wall. Unbolt the igniter from the oven floor and using a multimeter, test for continuity of power. That’s easy to do. Simply place one probe of the multimeter on one terminal of the igniter and the second probe on the other terminal. If your multimeter does not register anything between 0 and 1100 ohms, then the igniter is out and needs replacing.

Your oven has bad relays

Your oven has relays that usually correspond to the number of heating elements it has. Like other components of your oven, these relays are subject to damage and wear and tear. If your oven isn’t heating properly or at all, then it’s likely that these relays have burnt out. Your owner’s manual should have guidelines on how to go about replacing them, but it’s best to have a professional do the task for you, especially if you are not sure how to go about it.

Your oven isn’t appropriately calibrated

An oven that isn’t at the right temperature might be in need of calibration. Simply locate the calibration dial at the bottom of the small shaft or on the back of the temperature knob and adjust the temperature using the adjustment screw on the dial. Turning the adjustment screw clockwise increases the temperature and vice versa.

When to Seek Professional Help
